I recommend USB for desktops because with a short USB extension cable, you can position the antenna more favorably. With a card inside a tower, the antennas often are buried down low or have lossy coax cables to dorky antennas.

I don't think the USB has less transmitter power or poor receiver sensitivity; same chipset. It will have about 2dB of antenna disadvantage if the antenna is inside the USB package, but that's insignificant.
