Using RP-N53 extender - questions

I'm purchasing one of these from Amazon in an attempt to extend the wireless range of my RT-N56U...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPGKS4S/?tag=snbforums-20

I've preread the manual, and it seems as though if you set this to the same SSID it will act as an extender, and not a separate AP. Two questions...

1. has anyone had success with these, especially for boosting the 5Ghz. range?
2. it has an RJ45 jack on it... but little information on how to use this. I'm guessing that if I can plug it into a existing port on a switch somewhere else in the house, the range doesn't not rely on wifi back to the Asus directly, and would like be better (assuming that where my LAN port is located is somewhere where I want the extended coverage)?
