Using RT-N66U to boost signal from RT-AC87

Hello.

I recently upgraded my router to an Asus RT-AC87 and I'm still having signal issues at the other end of my 2100 square foot home. Can I use the router I upgraded from (Asus RT-N66U) to help increase my signal at the other end of the house? I'm wanting to accomplish this with having both routers using the same SSID and password information so I can move from one end of the house to the other while remaining on the same network. Is this possible? If so, what is the proper terminology for this and could someone please direct me to instructions on how to accomplish this task?

I neglected to mention that both ends of my house have wired internet. I'm just trying to have the same wireless network that will reach throughout my entire home. Can one router mirror the other to produce the same SSID, Password and channel? (forgive me if my terminology is wrong)

Do you have two ISP connections or simply have LAN cabling everywhere?

You can set both routers up with the same ssid and passwords, but they need to be on different channels.

Ideally, you should use the RT-N66U in AP mode with the RT-AC87U handling all the router and DHCP requests from clients. This will also allow you to have devices access each other from both routers too.

If you have two ISP's, it will be much more difficult to have them share devices like printers, NAS boxes, etc.

What you want to accomplish is to add an AP to your network to extend the wireless coverage of your network (that should cover the terminology).

I have LAN cabling through most of the house.

Ok, I set up my RT-N66U in AP mode in my bedroom. I now have two separate WIFI signals going through my house with the same SSID and passwords. One if from the RT-N66U and the other from the RT-AC87U. How do I make these a shared signal so I can move throughout the house using a wireless device and not worry about signal strength?

If you have connected the RT-N66U's WAN port to your network, you should be there.

In your bedroom, can you connect to the RT-N66U (notice the signal strength on your device) and browse the internet? If you can, you are done.

The devices you use do not know how many routers are using the same ssid, they only see it available and connect to it.

Your only possible issue now is how fast they switch from your RT-AC87U and your RT-N66U as you move throughout your home. But this isn't something the router can control (mostly), it is more dependent on the driver capabilities of the wireless card in the device.

i use n66u to extend wifi range to garden. I set n66u as repeater mode and it works wery well for me. 87u is ofcourse main router
