Hello,

I am trying to make ASUS RT-AC68U work with NordVPN. So, basically, I downloaded VPN config file from NordVPN, installed it on the router, entered my user/password. Now, when I click activate, the connection status is spinning and it doesn't connect. I don't see any useful info in the logs:

The system log has only this:

Mar 13 10:59:01 rc_service: service 3766:notify_rc start_vpnclient5
Mar 13 11:00:01 rc_service: service 3825:notify_rc start_vpnclient4
Mar 13 11:00:01 rc_service: service 3824:notify_rc start_vpnclient5
Mar 13 11:01:01 rc_service: service 3871:notify_rc start_vpnclient5
Mar 13 11:01:01 rc_service: service 3870:notify_rc start_vpnclient4
Mar 13 11:01:01 rc_service: waitting "start_vpnclient5" via ...
Mar 13 11:02:01 rc_service: service 3963:notify_rc start_vpnclient5
Mar 13 11:02:01 rc_service: service 3962:notify_rc start_vpnclient4
Mar 13 11:02:01 rc_service: waitting "start_vpnclient5" via ...
Mar 13 11:03:01 rc_service: service 4032:notify_rc start_vpnclient5
Mar 13 11:03:01 rc_service: service 4031:notify_rc start_vpnclient4
Mar 13 11:03:01 rc_service: waitting "start_vpnclient4" via ...

Connection log:
dp 192.168.1.137:60493 173.194.197.189:443 UNREPLIED
udp 192.168.1.137:57638 172.217.4.78:443 UNREPLIED
udp 192.168.1.137:61728 172.217.8.163:443 UNREPLIED

It is strange because I was able to do telnet 172.217.8.163 443 successfully from my laptop

NAT passthrough is enabled.

It works perfectly fine if I use this configuration on another router (Linksys) or via openVPN client on a laptop

Any ideas what might be wrong or how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks!

When I set up my AC68U Asus router with 5 different NordVPN OPVN files for different locations in US and other countries, sometimes noticed that some of the provided servers would not work--connection status is spinning also. But that others would work.
Do some of the servers actually work? Since I could get some to work, I never tried to troubleshoot the problem. Seemed to me the issue would be on the server side of that particular server.

Additional Note: Depending on the speed of your 68U (800MHz, 1000MHz, 1200MHz, 1400MHz) your VPN thoughput will run anywhere from less than 17MB/s (default clock 800MHz) to just over 31MB/s (overclocked to 1400MHz)--In my case.
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep BogoMIPS
I just ended up running the VPN on each client device, your computer has so much more processing power to encrypt/decrypt the connection and you get up to 6 clients that can connect at any time, and you have the option of running Nordlynx--i.e. wireguard which will provide blazing fast connection speeds. The Asus router does not support wireguard in it's current default official version.
