Maybe a silly question but...

I'm using a vpn provider which hands out public IPs without any NAT. If I setup the vpn on my AC86U will I still be protected by the firewall of the AC86U?

Yes, for me, however the firewall protects from my ISP IP and not the VPN IP. I did have a couple instances where AI Protection triggered on hits to the VPN IP, but those have been extremely rare for me, only 2 in four years, the router firewall did not record these attempts. I also use the Skynet firewall add on for enhanced security.
