What firmware for RT-N16?

I have an older RT-N16 that I used to use as my main router but I am now using it as a switch and WAP. The firmware on it is DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) mega - build 14929.

Are there any advantages to switching to other firmware - either newer Asus firmware, Merlin firmware, newer dd-wrt, etc?

One thing that I don't have that I wouldn't mind is multiple SSIDs - such as a guest SSID. Is this possible with other firmware on this device?

Guest SSIDs are available both in stock and with my firmware (not sure about Tomato, some variants might have it).

Which version of Merlin for this device as it looks like it can't support the most recent versions.

Why not? Just flash the latest version, which is 374.40.

OK great, I thought I read somewhere that the RT-N16 couldn't run the latest builds.

Since I am using the router as a WAP and switch does Merlin allow you to reassign the WAN port to be a LAN port? That way I can use the WAN port as the link to my LAN and have four ports to use to connect other devices.

There was no RT-N16 build for 374.38 and 374.39 indeed. I got the missing bits so I could release an RT-N16 build again with 374.40.

I haven't made any change there, so if Asus's original FW doesn't, mine won't either.

That's what AP mode does on both asus stock and Merlin firmware. Just put it in AP mode and plug Ethernet from main router in to N16 WAN port.

And the link to confirm.
