Currently have a Rog Rapture AC5300, looking at running a Aimesh system with the 86U
Rog does seems to be stable running lastest, just have some issues with VPN, where even if I dont want that device running through VPN, somehow it still uses there DNS, I have to manually input each to use ISP dns

Any thoughts? On running maybe the 86U as primary ?

the 86U should be your main, it has a better CPU and can handle VPN connections better. but from what i understand using aimesh always disables the 2nd 5Ghz band on tri-band routers.

I banged on all the setup options and for my setting the AIMesh was not the best performer. I have the 86U in media bridge mode, if you need wireless you use the repeater mode. I know what the specs are and on paper what is supposed to perform better. On paper the 86U should be the better option to be the router. The 86U in router mode did not perform as well as it in some kind of slave mode. You don't need to change the main router into any other mode beyond router. So you can keep the flexibility of the additional wireless radios. Whatever 5ghz channel you select for the slave to connect, the settings in the router for that channel run the show. The router in some kind of slave mode is just that, a slave.

Try it. If it works well enough for your clients, then you'll know you won't have to pay more for your next router.

To note I do have about 15 devices currently connected (2) raspberry pi, (3) wireless cameras, then desktops, laptop, phones, and tablets and also a USB drive connected to the 5300
Running TC4400 modem
