Wifi network marked public network in Network Status

In Status my wifi Local Area Connection is marked Public Network, but in Properties my Wifi is marked Private.
I played around with settings and was able to get the Local Area connection marked Private in Status, but I had no connection.
I rebooted and it changed back to the way it was at first. I'm wondering why the Local area connection is marked Public.
