Trying to improve my wifi network, have a Fritzbox7490 Modem (FTTN Aus - VDSL), connecting to the NBN , and adding an Asus RT-AC68U as a repeater (ie using wifi, not ethernet.)
Have it setup, and it works fine – for about 10 minutes, then the RT-AC68U loses touch with the modem. Only way at this point to reestablish the connect, is reboot the 7490 – doesn't fix by rebooting the Asus, so thinking it is a Fritz issue..
Using the 5G network to extend, both basically default setup, and have tried both DHCP and manual IP on the Asus.
Ideas welcomed and appreciated?
Thanks, John

Get an Ethernet cable and hard wire the devices and use it as an AP instead of trying to do what you're doing. Speeds and reliability will be better.

If you insist on using a WIFI backhaul then 2.4ghz will be more consistent over a longer distance but, speed will drop on the extended area.

Rethinking things a bit and doing it properly would use AX based equipment and AP's instead of neutering a router into AP mode.

Since you're on VDSLI suspect speed isn't' the highest priority here unless internally on the LAN. having a good internal setup makes for an easier life though instead of wasting time on issues.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I am totally unable to run ethernet, so need to suck what I can from WiFi...
