Will A New Router Really Improve Performance?

Small point of clarification please -- it appears your charts reference two routers:

The RT-AC68U is referenced/tested in the first graphic.

The remainder of the article references the RT-AC66U.

Does that mean they are identical under the case/label? Do they respond to the adapters in the same manner.
 
performance is constrained by your ISP speed of course. Then by your client device capabilities and bi-directional signal strength. Adding a WiFi Access Point can increase speed in weak signal areas. Note the clinet device's transmitted signal is often a limitation too.

Assuming you have an 11n client and WiFi router.

The first graphic (now titled "Three AC1900 Routers compared - 5 GHz downlink") compares the performance of three AC1900 routers, one of which is the ASUS RT-AC68U.

The tests in the article use the ASUS RT-AC66U as the reference router.

They are not the same router.
