Wireguard + NextDNS CLI on Same Box?

Anybody have any guidance on running the NextDNS cli DoH proxy on the same box as wireguard? I'm using ubuntu server 20.10 on a raspberry pi 400. I used pivpn to setup wireguard. I'm wanting to use nextdns cli for both wireguard client dns and internal network dns. Nextdns is listening on localhost:53, but dns queries seem to be using whatever is in resolv.conf instead. Thanks!
