Wireless Speed Issue

Hello... I'm a newbie, so hopefully people won't bash...

Background:
I live in a medium density residential area. Just bought the router yesterday and upgraded firmware to .246. Have about 10 wireless networks in my neighborhood scanned using NetSurveyor utility. I've set the channel at 7 or 8 (where no other network is using)

- when router plugged into laptop, I get ~20mbps down, ~0.5mbps up from speedtest.net (ping is less than 20ms)
- when using wifi (2.4ghz) with laptop, I get ~6mbps down, ~0.5mbps up from speedtest.net (ping is less than 20ms); laptop next to router
- when using wifi (2.4ghz) with iphone4, I get ~3-9mbps down, ~0.5mbps up from speedtest.net (ping is 80-100ms); iphone4 next to router

Are these wireless speeds typical? I get these wireless speeds with my predecessor router (WRT54GL), and thinking of reading the raving reviews for the RT-N66U, I was hoping speeds would drastically improve (at least to 15mpbs down).

I can't even stream a 720p video without waiting it to load completely... has this to do with the firmware upgrade? I've rebooted & reset the router (holding the button for 30 sec on the router) after firmware upgrade.

Things to note:
- 5ghz band (no device can run this frequency)
- everything can run on 'n' if possible, otherwise can consider to run on 'g'

Do I need to reside to using tomato? (I've had tomato installed in my WL-520GU before, so I am familiar with the process)

Thanks in advance!

At what speed does your computer report it's connected at? What wireless card does it have?

Will check that later tonight... but how do I check that on my iphone4?

Also, one more observation, my devices disconnects from the router after moving about 10 feet away from the router (non-direct sight). I never had this issue with my WRT54GL or WL-520GU. The reception is simply VERY poor... anyone has experienced this before?

Is my rt-n66u a lemon??

iPhone 4 support 'n' but not 5GHz

No idea, I don't deal with iDevices.

If moving 10 feet away cuts the connection then there's a chance your router is defective indeed. Make sure it's not sitting next to a device that could cause interference (such as a cordless phone), and that the three antennas are well fixed at the back.
