Worthwhile to upgrade the WRT54G?

New Around Here
Hi all,

I have a Linksys WRT54G v3 (flashed with DD-WRT) which I’ve used for years. I have 2 heavily used desktop computers and a WHS machine connected via the integrated switch. One of those desktop computers is used pretty extensively for online gaming.
I’m not happy with the throughput that I’m getting for my wired clients, and I’m considering upgrading. My connection is cable broadband at about 24Mbs. I don’t have devices connected via wireless very often, so that’s not a concern here; and I don’t mind losing DD-WRT.
I have 2 questions:

#1 Is it likely that I will notice an increase in speed (specifically with regard to gaming) by upgrading my current router to a newer/faster model?

#2 After reading several reviews, looking at the Router Charts, and reading through these forums, I’m seriously considering the Linksys E4200 or the Netgear WNDR3700. Would you suggest one over the other? (or perhaps something completely different?)

I should also note that I don’t have a problem with purchasing a wired-only router and turning my current WRT54G into an AP only. Sure it’s nice to only have one box sitting on the desk, but if there’s a reasonably priced higher performance wired router that would better suit my needs, I can deal with the additional box for the AP.

**If this thread would be better served in the wired networking forum, I apologize and will be glad to move it there instead.

I didn't test the WRT54G. But the V1's top routing speed was 20 Mbps. So there's a good chance that the V3 is limiting your speed.

Pretty much any current-day router will provide enough routing speed to keep up with your 24 Mbps connection. Check the Router Charts.

People can game on dial-up, it's not throughput that counts in gaming, it's latency and you may never see a differnece unless the WRT is creating high latency under load.
