My Xfinity internet download speed has been 400 Mbps for several months. Today I got an email from them saying because they are increasing my speed to 400 Mbps, my Arris SB6183 isn't capable of that speed so I need a new modem. Just ran the speedtest on the Xfinity site and got 481 Mpbs! I get similar results with Ookla and the built-in Merlin speedtest. The 6183 specs says it's capable of up to 400 Mbps. So I guess my old Arris is good for a while yet. Unless there's enough difference between Docsis 3.0 and 3.1 to warrant the upgrade. For my use (web surfing, email, streaming video), I don't think so.

You got that notice as Comcast over provisions speed by 20%.
On the 400 tier you actually get about 484 Mbps.

Unless they begin forcing something, you can ignore that email. When/if you can't get online, it may be time to revisit getting a new modem then.
