Figured it out- had Wireless MAC filtering on. Worked for the iPad when I entered it's MAC address, but not the iPhone. Is using the MAC filter worth it? Edited to note that without MAC filter on the iPhone finds the 5g just fine.

Nada, just lowercase letters and numbers.

Unhiding the SSIDs didn't work. And yes, I did "forget" the old SSIDs on the iPhone.

Many thanks again. Have set them as unique SSIDs, and got the iPad to connect easily to the 5ghz. The iPhone on the other hand keeps giving me a "wrong password" message every time I try to sign onto it. Could just be a flaw of the 5s, will have to see what happens when I upgrade to the 7...
