Is this homeplug/load balancer solution for 2 ISPs viable?

Mikrotik routers have a very large temperature tolerance and they make outdoor rated hardware. You could use a Mikrotik to load balance in the attic or outside, then go into powerline network for distribution.

DIY home surveillance with IP camera?

My cameras are all wired. You have to get power to them somehow, usually getting POE to them is the same difficulty.

    Padavan's Custom Firmware

I have been a Padavan user for quite a while. Does anyone know what the plans are for continuation when the Google Code change happens later this month? I haven't seen anything on the welcome page of the project and a quick search of this thread didn't pull up anything obvious.

DIY home surveillance with IP camera?

My house has 6 IP cameras. I only record based on motion detection. I can access all 6 cameras from my phone or tablet. The cameras also e-mail a dozen or so JPEGs to my ISP so that there is an offsite copy of motion detection. Even if the local storage is stolen there is still a set of...

    DS213 upgrade question

I just replaced a DS409+ with a DS415+. I took the 4 drives out of the 409, put then in the 415 in the same relative positions and powered it up. It took a while to get the latest DSM installed on the applications updated, but I had no problems in migrating 6 generations of Synology devices.

Help choosing a small business NAS for remote backups

Is your thought to have a NAS at each business and have software on each PC create an image file to the local NAS? Then have the distributed NAS boxes upload their images to somewhere? I guess you could avoid the local NAS units if you partitioned the PCs into C: and D: Create the backup...

    Long ethernet cable runs

To do fiber at 1000 feet, you will want 50 micron. That is good for 750m at gigabit rates. 62.5 micron is good for 300m at gigabit.

Ds414 keep changing up address setting

There is a $60 premium for the DS415play version. I am just glad I haven't purchased the DS414 yet.

Ds414 keep changing up address setting

This thread is disappointing to me. I was just thinking of upgrading my DS409+ to a DS414. I guess I will monitor the Synology forum before pulling THAT trigger. The DS415play may be the choice even though the transcoding isn't a feature I care about....

Ds414 keep changing up address setting

The Synology forums have a thread about this problem -- http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=85544 My quick read of it makes it sound like RMA time....

    Used Synology or new Lenovo?

The DS409+ will only have VERY limited firmware and applications updates. The 5.x firmware baseline is not available for the 2009 era units. I have a DS409+ and am thinking about replacing it with a newer unit.

    South Carolina power question

You might throw in a Kill-A-Watt meter in with the rest of the care package. That is a simple way to see what the voltage fluctuation is over time. If there is a voltage problem (too high) then the power company will change the transformer feeding that area and lower the voltage.

Cheapest NAS for 30+ users network

For 30 people, is one NAS the best answer? What is the cost of a failure? I would get two units so that you can back up one to the other. You could save a few $$$ by getting one NAS and using multiple volumes on it to do backups, but you still have a single point of failure (chassis). Does...

    Rackmount UPS - suppestions

You need to know what the real power usage from each server is. Some newer server can tell you that from IPMI interface. For something older you might have to use a WattsUp or equivalent. Once you know the real usage, then you can start sizing a UPS. The APC website has good tools. I like...

    Running optical to attic

Typical "jumper" type cable will deteriorate when exposed to sunlight for a long time. I think you would need to get outdoor rated cable. Corning's website has a lot of info. There is also, outdoor (even direct burial) cat5 cable. That would be a much cheaper choice and not much more visible.
