ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

I've got the Pi-Hole set to use Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) I've gone in and checked "Use DNSSEC" on the Pi-Hole and restarted everything. I also set "Enable multicast DNS (Avahi mDNS)" back to "Yes" on the router as well. Seems like it's working so far.

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

Yes. Well, it was enabled and I never enabled it. So I assume it is on by default. I guess it's possible that rebooting the router alone fixed the issue but it was just taking a while for clients to connect and maybe if I had waited longer, everything would have been ok. I'll play around...

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

Well, I spoke too soon. It looks like a bunch of the devices in my house can't connect to WiFi anymore. They see the router, but they can't connect. EDIT: I rebooted the router and didn't see any clients connected. Then I changed "Enable multicast DNS (Avahi mDNS)" to "No" and everything...

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

Yep. Thanks again for your help. <happy dance> One weird thing is that I can access the dashboard using this URL now... http://pi.hole/admin It never worked before, I always had to use http://192.168.1.2/admin So, bonus. :)

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

Yeah, I was using that page as a reference. I set the domain name "ultranet" and also set "ultranet" in the router LAN page

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

Searching for "conditional forwarding", I found this page. Is this still valid?... https://carlosfelic.io/network/configuring-the-pi-hole-with-asus-routers-merlin-or-johns-fork/

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

This doesn't appear to work. Tailing the pi-hole log doesn't show any activity. Here's my settings for WAN and LAN respectively...

ASUS RT-AC68U - The correct way to configure DNS for Pi-Hole (standalone device)

I'm running the latest "Fork" firmware Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS release V44E5 I've set up Pi-Hole on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ and I have it plugged directly into my ASUS RT-AC68U. I've configured a static IP address for the Raspberry Pi... 192.168.1.2 using the DHCP settings on the ASUS...

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

Sorry about that. I was posting more detailed error logs here that I figured were specific to this fork and not useful in the other post. It ended up being a problem with the VPN provider. One of their locations (the first one I ever tried, of course) is dead. Everything is working perfectly...

Free (or very cheap) OpenVPN services with multiple US locations

I just figured it out. I was trying to use their US-Dallas location and apparently that's no longer valid because it's not in this list... https://support.fastestvpn.com/vpn-servers When I switched it to phoenix, it worked perfectly.

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

Is there any kind of guide for setting up OpenVPN with this fork? I'm trying to set up FastestVPN and their Asus instructions are completely different from what I'm seeing... https://support.fastestvpn.com/tutorials/routers/asus/openvpn I'm obviously doing something wrong judging from the...

Free (or very cheap) OpenVPN services with multiple US locations

I'm having some trouble getting FastestVPN working. It's not connecting. The setup instructions on their site don't match the ASUS Merlin fork build that I'm using. Do you see anything obviously wrong? I'm trying to set it up to work with MLB TV on my Roku TV. Right now I have "Redirect...

Free (or very cheap) OpenVPN services with multiple US locations

Followup question... Are you using the TCP profiles or the UDP profiles for MLB? The instructions say "Open TCP_Files or UDP_Files whatever you desire". From what I find online, it says that it depends on what the service supports. Is it a one-or-the-other situation? You can't have it set...

Interesting. What technology do they use? Is it OpenVPN?

Free (or very cheap) OpenVPN services with multiple US locations

I'm looking to dip my toe into the OpenVPN pool for certain devices on my home network via my ASUS RT-AC68U router. I'm living in the US and I'm trying to find a free or very cheap OpenVPN service that has multiple US endpoints to get around some regional restrictions for streaming content...

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

I'm currently running: 374.43_33E7j9527 on an ASUS RT-AC68U I enabled QoS at one point so I could set up some bandwidth limiting on specific machines on my network, but I don't need to do that anymore and I've removed those rules. How do I turn QoS off now? When I try to change the slider to...

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

I turned off Universal Beamforming and it didn't appear to make any difference. However I think that turning on my Hisense smart TV might have been the thing that was killing the PS4 connections. I have no idea how. I switched my TV to use the 5G wireless network and I haven't had the issue...

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

It was only the PS4 consoles that lost their connection. All the other wireless devices are still connected. The only thing in the general log around that time is this sort of thing. Note that 192.168.1.223 is the IP of the PS4 that I turned on. Seems like a lot of noise to connect a single...
