Router with virtual access point function: which vendors?

Hi, I don't think this is an unexisting feature, but I'm looking for a router, which can create a virtual access point, which I can bridge (or put in the same vlan as) the WAN port (thus bypassing NAT + Firewall). I need it for (wireless + wired) gear that needs to obtain DHCP lease from the...

Router with VLAN capable WAN port?

Colour me stupid but does this exist? I just want the WAN port to function as an untagged member of, lets say, VLAN2. Then, I'd create a trunk (tagged port) on a LAN port of the router, which trunks VLAN 2 and some other VLAN. Assume this trunks ends in a VLAN switch, then members of VLAN 2...

Switch latency experiment (100 Mbit) using ICMP ping

I just thought I'd share what I have found out which is probably well known but may help less seasoned people. I've tested a: - Mikrotik 250GS switch (gigabit) 5 port switch. This is a managed switch. - A Cisco SLM-2008 (gigabit) 8 port switch. This is a managed switch - Netgear Prosafe...

how to measure router WAN to LAN latency

Hello, I think for sure Tim is going to know this. So I connected my Laptop (wired) to the WAN port of the router and put it in the same subnet as the (static) WAN IP I assigned to the router. Next, I connected my desktop to a LAN-port and I put its IP as DMZ in the router. So, the laptop is...

    802.1q capable router

Got myself a problem I want to solve with such router. My cable ISP provides DHCP with different parameters to their TV setup boxes on one side and computers on the other side. With a router placed between the cable modem and both computers + setup box, the setup box cannot reach the internet...

A question to Tim about the RAID 5 tests

Tim, Some devices were tested with 4 or more drives and the one I was looking out for, the RNDP6350, was tested with only 3 drives. Doesn't that make RAID 5 comparisons on the chart useless? I must be missing something here!

    iscsi (target)

I read some paper from Thecus and stuff but I (still) don't really get it. I want to buy a Thecus because they are stackable and this seems to work with iscsi. I assume the 'master/initiator' treats the 'slaves' as targets. So that way data copied to a share on the master can actually end up...

    VLAN: Can't access switch anymore

I'm stumped about getting this to work so I hope someone can lend a hand. I don't even know how to begin explaining but I'll try. I have read the VLAN articles but I still can't figure this out. My switch, a Cisco SLM2008, has become unreachable. No ping, no webinterface. Its management...

    VLAN and DHCP (tough question)

If you could please offer some advice on this I'll be very thankful: My gear: A cable modem (Motorola SURFboard) A router (Draytek Vigor 2130) A Switch (Cisco SLM2008) Setup description: The cable modem is connected to the Draytek's WAN port, and the Cisco switch is obviously connected to a...

Considering a Draytek 2130 but with some doubts about VPN performance

Going from the review, the VPN speed looks a tad slow. I'll have 5 megabit per second upload soon and I intent to use it. However, the 2130 doesn't seem to get nowhere near that figure. I've looked in the database, but there does not appear to be a similar priced alternative. Is anyone knows...

    Bind to mac

I was thinking about buying the Netgear WNDR3700 and since it has been reviewed I have a question: is bind to mac possible? I need relay my WOL packets over the internet you see:). Apart from the static port forwarding this is the only thing holding me off from buying it... Is someone owns...

Test request: Draytek 2130 and 2920

Affordable routers for more demanding consumers. The first boast a 800 mbit nat throughput. I'd like to see that:D

2 DHCP sources over one switch

I should have known I'd make mayhem lol. So I've got a cable modem (for my digital tv) and a ADSL-modem (for the computers) handing out DHCP. Since they hand out addresses from different subnets this causes mayhem. As far as I know, I can't set a fixed address in the cable box. My computers...

Gigabit speed tests performed. Who can help analyze the results

Hi guys, I'll try to be brief and to the point here so that I don't make a mess of the opening post. POE IEEE 802.3af vs IEEE 802.3at

Hi everyone, I've got a Linksys smart switch that can be powered over POE. It says it supports the IEEE 802.3af standard but my POE injector is of the newer IEEE 802.3at standard. Will smoke come out of my switch if I use the newer POE (gigabit) injector:D
