Opinions/experiences with OSes for hardware firewalls?

I have not tried the others as Sophos was my first choice and I love it. The free Home license is for one UTM but it allows all features (many of them are Enterprise so not needed) and you can have up to 50 devices (IP addresses) behind the UTM. I was surprised that it worked after install...

    ASUSTOR 5 SERIES

If you want to have 8GB in your NAS to run VirtualBox VMs, etc then that is fine, otherwise you could 2 of these 2GB Kingston SO-DIMMs from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239973

    ASUSTOR 5 SERIES

I bought my 2GB (actually 2x2GB) from Amazon in UK but this is what I bought: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820191448 Server memory (ECC) will not work in the NAS as it uses the Intel Celeron CPU that does not support ECC memory - it just uses standard laptop SO-DIMMs...

    RT-AC68U on Merlin Frozen Issue

Maybe keep an eye on the temperatures to see if it is over-heating?

Yet another post about ECC Memory...

In theory, ECC memory is a good idea however in SOHO NAS it is not always possible as the CPU (Memory controller) has to support ECC. I just checked Intel and the Atom / Celeron chips do not, you will need a Core i3 or higher for ECC.

Connecting a Router to a wireless network

DG834G is 802.11g so if you could use it your WAN would be limited to 54Mbps max - I would think that the free WLAN is either 11n or maybe 11ac. DD-WRT or Tomato firmware may work if your DG834G is v4 - v1, v2, v3 will not: http://secure.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Known_incompatible_devices...

Log into the routers admin page and disable Remote Admin if you don't need or want to have any access from Internet.

    ASUSTOR 5 SERIES

Update to my post above: Setup my new AS5002T with the 2 WD Red 2TB drives and ran Bad Sector Check and SMART scan from Dr. ASUSTOR - no errors after ~5 hours per disk. So far I am impressed with the hardware, it is quiet and looks/feels great. To answer my own questions above: 1. I was...

Shockingly Simple Flaw Leaves 'Millions Of Home Routers Open To Attack'

Most home users are not educated on the role of a gateway router. Most home users should not be exposing anything to the Internet and if they need remote access they should know how to run a VPN. USB ports and DMZ options on ISP home routers is just a bad idea. Best is to run a UTM behind the...

    Factory Hard Reset

If you want to upgrade to a Beta firmware then you should download it from ASUS and then do a manual firmware update from the routers firmware update page - the auto detect and update will only show released versions. Then after it restarts, you should do a full reset to factory defaults to...

    Testing New Hard Drives

I am running the Asustor built-in Bad Sector Check on each new disk as this runs each disk at full speed for ~4 hours and I can monitor disk and NAS temps then decide to keep or return suspect disks. As you do not have a NAS you can try WD tools from...

Back again, looking for another router...

I decided on the RT-AC68U (although I use it as a WAP). For me the clincher for Asus over TP-Link, Netgear, etc was RMerlin's firmware which opens up a lot of options and fixes issues far better/quicker than relying on a single vendor. As for DHCP, I use a netmask of 255.255.255.192 which gives...

    Which NAS do you own?

Having just been through selecting a new NAS to replace my 6 year old NAS, I thought that it would be interesting to see how many people are actually using each of the main vendor products on offer. Also given that Asustor is a "new" kid on the block and how they have risen in the Charts (top 2...

RT-AC68U and lan port as WAN backup dont work

I think that you should test this without disconnecting any cables as the router will sense the cable is not there. Try to disconnect the internet connection coming into your ISP modem and then see if the AC68 fails over to the other connection.

RT-AC68U and lan port as WAN backup dont work

I don't have two WAN connections but I think only one of the two will be active at the same time not both together - it is fail-over when one goes down. Have you tried to turn off Modem on WAN - does it change over to LAN1 modem?

    ASUSTOR 5 SERIES

First, thanks for the info provided in this thread - I am thinking of getting a new AS5002T. My current NAS is a Synology DS209j with 2x1TB Samsung drives. It is starting to show its age and has crashed twice recently, requiring a reload of DSM but thankfully no data loss on my single RAID0...

    Looking for feedback: Traffic Analyzer

AC68U (Merlin 378.51) running in AP mode / Browser : IE 11 Traffic Statistics turned on for last 7 days but no data displayed. Traffic Monitor - only Real-time works from when I go to the page, changing settings give no data.

    Asuswrt-Merlin 378.51 is out

Wow - I just loaded this FW and I love the new features and tools - way cooler than stock - thanks Merlin :) I just have one question - does Site Survey only work for 2.4GHz? I do not see any for 5GHz but inSSIDer shows me that there is one other extender in range.......
