    New routers vs older smartphones

Tim, where I'm from (Singapore), the best ranked AC1900 router Asus AC68u is about USD 178 vs the best ranked AC2600 Synolgy rt 2600AC is USD 233. Amazon has much better pricing but for electronics, I prefer to buy local for warranty reasons. Given that the Asus is almost 4 years old, would...

    New routers vs older smartphones

Well, I'll be upgrading from a N router, so anything will be an improvement! Given that the newer routers are 4x4 and comes with better chips and design as per System Error Message's post , I'm tempted to go with them for a bit of future-proofing.

    New routers vs older smartphones

Appreciate the feedback System Error Message and joegreat. Yes, the clients are the bottleneck. I am still using an old N300 router and was looking to upgrade to AC. Isn't 2x2 radio required for connection up to 886 Mbps? Also, this just the link speed correct? Since you mention that you can...

    New routers vs older smartphones

Hi all This is probably a silly question, but how do I determine what realistic wireless download speeds can my devices reach? If I use the RT2600ac for example, what would be the average download speed (ignoring the usual environmental effects) on a: - Samsung S4 and iphone 6 (both of which I...

    Wi-Fi System Roundup

That's quite interesting. Although that would mean the extender will only operate on one band, but this would be much cheaper than the Orbi solution.

    Wi-Fi System Roundup

For shame, a really old Tplink N300 router. Which to be fair has served me quite well running as a WAP (my ISP provided router/modem is horrible) and being connected to a NAS, couple of phones and laptop. The reason I want to upgrade is the wifi signal is pretty poor at the back of the...

    Wi-Fi System Roundup

Really appreciate the clear and simple explanation. Would a traditional standalone router like a Netgear R7000 be better or worse than the Orbi if walls/doors are the major culprit? My apartment is not very large, maybe about 1300 sq ft.

    Wi-Fi System Roundup

Thanks for that. One more question - I also read that using Wifi extenders traditionally means less bandwidth. Without getting into the technical details (since I most likely won't understand it!), does the Orbi somehow get around this? Would a traditional standalone router like a Netgear R7000...

    Wi-Fi System Roundup

Hi all, first time poster so go easy on me if I don't make sense =) How well would the Netgear Orbi system work if the satellites are behind a door or wall? I read that 5Ghz signal don't penetrate walls well, so would this make the Orbi not ideal? I need to extend my Wifi signal and don't have...
