    DS713 with HP1910 switch - bonding

Hi, I have a Synology DS713 which seems to be working well. Very pleased. I have a HP1910 switch and I am looking to use both network ports on the Synology bonded together to get better throughput (when appropriate). I configured the Synology, then I configured the switch (btw so...

    NETGEAR ReadyNAS RN516 Reviewed

In what way (genuinely interested, not challenging)?

    Netgear?

Thanks Tim, I assumed Netgear would send review samples out to the respected sites such as SNB first. You'd have thought that they'd do it soon after product release but maybe (putting cynical hat on for a sec) they thought they'd get a couple of firmware updates out having got some more real...

    Netgear?

One of the things that scares me about the QNap support is that a lot seems to be done via Skype and IM, with some people saying that they initiate support requests but nothing happens. It just seems haphazard. Netgear support is outsourced and from my experience can be frustrating but at...

    Netgear?

Hi Steve, Thanks for your input. TBH, I was looking at the QNap TS-269Pro as well but the netgear provides snapshots which I felt would be useful and also offers a 5yr warranty which made me think that they were treating the business seriously. It is also *considerably* cheaper than than...

    Netgear?

Considering a Netgear NAS but looking at the forum it's not particularly active with hardly any input from Netgear staff other than from what seems to be an ex employee. Does anyone know what the status is? I've not been enamoured with Netgear phone support in the past and this doesn't seem to...

You don't get 75Mbs with encryption do you?

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

Oh, and am I correct in thinking that btrfs is invisible - it's used as the underlying FS; you create a new slice/partition and format that to ext4 etc? Which FS are you using?

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

Sounds good S4mb4. Don't suppose you've tried installing add-ons like svn, virtual box or the like? What did you do to increase speed fom 75 to 100Mbs? Replace switch? What's the noise like?

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

No, didn't mean to confuse matters, it was just an illustration of technique and why an entire copy of data isn't necessary. Rgds

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

Stevech: it doesn't actually need to copy the data; VMware will just start using a different hard disk file when a snaphot is created. S4mb4: which country are you based? I got an email from a supplier in the uk saying that they had the 516 in stock. I'm dying to find out what they're like...

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

Not my understanding of journaling. A journaling fs is a fs with an audit trail of what's happened which means its easier to recover from issues. A snapshot could be created from such a fs but my understanding is that they're generally considered distinct. Someone else may have a more...

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

I don't think ext4 does snapshots does it? It's immature tho which makes me a little nervous of it.

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

There are a lot of interesting features and they look great value, but I suspect it's going to be a PITA for Tim to review - so many differences to test! The 2 bay devices are now available in the UK so hopefully review models will be sent out soon.

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

The Wikipedia article on btrfs isn't inspiring but I'm hoping that the information on that page is out of date! :-) In fairness, it starts getting a lot more positive later in the page. Certainly has a lot of +ves if it works well.

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

I can totally understand being annoyed, but it's not that uncommon - Apple did it with Siri for example. I imagine it won't be long before hacked versions of firmware are available for the older devices, tho most people with a Prosumer device wouldn't want to run an unsupported config I guess...

NETGEAR Rolls Out All New ReadyNASes

Interesting to read about the new ReadyNAS line. Not surprising - the prices here in the UK have been quite low for some models for some time. The RN516xx looks like a 6-bay version of the QNAP-TS879 but with only 6 bays, but *considerably* cheaper ($1000 dollars less?) or is there some...

    Yes, Routers do die

Yes, in the cold light of day, almost all widely-available routers will meet the requirements of most, I guess a lots of it comes down to favoured colour of LEDs... :-)

    Yes, Routers do die

I imagine you have lots "handy"; from your previous comment about using the netgear because it was popular, I thought you might have chosen an Asus. No significant discoveries not found at review time?
