I just connected a USB 3 HDD to my AC66 in preparation for setting up network backup and sharing. I did a couple of backup tests and then downloaded LAN_Speed_Test(Lite). During my testing, I couldn't get over 100 mbps according to both the PC stats and confirmed on the router's traffic monitor.

My PC reports a 1 Gbps link and I'm using cat 5e between the PC and router. I'm running Merlin's 376.49_5 firmware.

Is there a known wired LAN performance problem?

If not, why is the wired ethernet so slow?

The problem is not the LAN, it is the USB HDD you're using.

To get closer to LAN speeds, use a NAS with LAN connections.

While I'd love to get a NAS, I haven't found a decent one I can afford right now.

I don't understand how my USB HDD could be the bottleneck. It's a USB 3 enclosure. I understand the AC66 router only has USB 2 connectors, so it will be limited by USB 2's max speed, but that is 480 mbps.

Do you mean the AC66 router/firmware can't feed data to its' USB ports over ~100 mbps?

It is a limitation of the cpu power available on consumer routers. That is why a NAS is recommended, which can more easily saturate the LAN depending on the hardware it has.

Broadcom's USB controller isn't exactly a top performer. It will rely heavily on the CPU.
