Can't hotlink images anymore?

Three days ago I posted this review:

in which I have several hotlinked images. I added them using the standard "picture" icon in the advanced editor, which adds tags. Screenshot attached, taken from editing the review thread.

Yesterday I wanted to post another review of a different product. However this "picture" icon is gone. I tried manually inserting [IMG] and tags around the photo URL but it does not insert the photo inline, it just makes the link clickable. I've attached another screenshot - it would be much better to hotlink these too but anyway.

Here's a test - an image with tags.

As you see, it's just a clickable link, not an inline image.

I know hotlinking is frowned-upon by many sites but sometimes there's no other way to do what you want to do. Has this been suddenly disabled?

Nothing has been changed. I usually attach images to posts.

Strange. Why has the editor changed then?

I usually attach as well, but in certain situations it's nice to have them inline to illustrate a point.

Very interesting - certain subforums have this option, others don't.

This subforum allows hotlinking:

Yes. You are right. tags are disabled in most forums. This was changed about a year ago when there was a lot of spam. I also found people inserting large images that broke the site format.

The ASUS forum permissions were an oversight since those forums were created after the lockdown changes.

Sorry for the inconvenience. But I am leaving permissions as is.
