New Around Here
i just bought a Promise technology SmartStor Ns4300n off of Craigslist. i really dont like the interface or included software. plus there doesnt seem to be much help on the internet, it being an older machine. i was wondering if its possible to replace the existing OS with an alternative, which would be best, and how i would go about doing this. im a complete noob with this stuff, iv build "regular" computers for friends and family, but im completely lost when it comes to networking ect. any help would be awesome!

did you manage to get freeNAS working on this device? Or gave up your idea? I would like to do the same thing right now, but I'm not sure if it's possible and how.

Reviving an old NAS and old post.

Hmm, we'll where / what is the OS installed? If you can overwrite that with NAS4Free you might have a chance.

It's a really old Freescale/PPC box - 2008 timeframe... performance for the time was decent, but progress...

Might be better for eWaste than spending more time...
