New Around Here
Hi There,
I'm currently connecting to an OpenVPN service with a RT-AX88U router, getting 180mbit/s or so vs the native connection's ~550mbit. The router is maxed out on a single core

From these:
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/asuswrt-merlin-386-3-is-now-available.73815/page-12#post-704070
(says OpenVPN is single threaded so capped on one core, and likely to be that way indefinitely)

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/openvpn-client-speed.72936/post-692938
(says RT-AX88U will max out ~200mbit depending on the VPN method used)

It sounds like that's what I should expect on my router, and multicore OpenVPN isn't an option so I'm wondering if this can be improved with more recent hardware.
Does anyone happen to know whether any of the newer router models have significant increases in CPU power over an AX-88U?

Thank you in advance!

No.

The alpha WiFi 7 routers have more powerful processors, but the speed benefits are not proportional to their insanely high prices.

If the prices were linear (to processing power), those 2.6GHz models would cost 30% more than a 2GHz GT-AX6000. Not 4 or 5 times the cost, depending on sales.
