Just got an Asus rt-ac86u. So far so good .

My galaxy s9 will drop to 2.4ghz .I'm guessing when it get out range. But it never goes back into 5ghz .

Is this normal?

The device decides when it wants to switch, so yes, it is not unexpected if both radios have the same SSID. If you need to stay on 5GHz, then you will likely have to add APs and reduce the power on the 2.4 GHz or change the SSID for the 2.4 GHz radio.

If it's two different SSID's, then the phone will not go back to 5GHz, as the 2.4 signal is fat and happy - as far as it knows, it has no reason to change a good connection (different SSID is consider potentially different network)

Common SSID - the newer samsungs are better about this...
