I am trying to setup Wake on Lan (WOL) on one of my MacBook Pro (Yosemite 10.10.1 from the Internet (WAN) and LAN. Setup steps:

1). Enable port forwarding
From ASUS Web GUI --> WAN --> Virtual Server / Port Forwarding and enter port 7 and 9 going to my MacBook Pro. Click "Apply"

2). Enable WOL in MacBook Pro
From System Preferences --> Energy Saver --> enabled:
  • Wake for Wi-Fi network access
  • Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter

Shutdown my MacBook (NOT sleep - completely powered off). Using my iPhone, tried to wake my MacBook:
1).From the Internet, using Parallel Access app - does not work. (http://kb.parallels.com/en/122033)

2). From LAN (iPhone connected to same Wi-fi as MacBook), using Fing app - does not work. http://osxdaily.com/2013/12/14/wake-on-lan-mac-iphone/

At this point I am not sure what is the problem. My MacBook Pro DOES support Wifi wake on LAN. From System Information, it shows "Wake On Wireless: Supported"

Is it the router, Yosemite OS or the iPhone? Can anyone provide some insight to this?

are you absolutely sure you have the correct MAC address to put in the magic packet? devices nowadays have multiple network adapters. Make sure you use the correct MAC.

I did. With the Fing iPhone app, it'll find and remember my MacBook's IP and MAC address when the machine is ON. When I turn the machine off, it will still show up in the Fing app but as off. That's where I tried to do the WOL.

Same with the Parallel Access app.

Wait.. Is WOL only when the MacBook is on Sleep or I can do it when it is completely off?

first remove the port forwarding rules you added.
Go to
http://192.168.1.1/Main_WOL_Content.asp and add you pc lan mac address.

In most cases you also need to enable wake on lan on bios plus (wake on magic packet) on the pc lan card advance settings, also power savings settings on the lan card may need changing.

As far a i know wake-on-lan only works on wired connections, but then i know zilch about apple devices.

In my setup im able to wake/start any pc from a Wan/Lan via remote desktop etc.

Yup, I removed any forwarding from the router.

I have MacBooks though, so there's no BIOS settings. The MacBook does support wireless wake up, per my 1st post, though I am not sure how does it work with WOL.

WWOL on Macs depend on the router supporting the Apple specific sleep-proxy functionality - it works on AirPort routers, outside of that, it really depends on the router vendor implementation for WWOL...

Quotes from users on the interwebs:

You cannot wake from off or hibernate mode the way you can on a PC. You can only wake it from sleep mode. Also note that after a certain amount of time sleeping they will hibernate automatically. You can check this with the pmset -g command. I believe it's the StandbyDelay setting.

Wake is working fine for me. Both wired and wireless. I found that wake over wireless only works if my MacBook Pro is sleeping with the screen open. If I put it to sleep by closing the lid it won't wake up. If I put it to sleep, with the screen open, via the menu, it works fine.

Some interesting reports via google search.

Good luck.

Hey all - thanks for the information!

Looks like the Wake-on-LAN (WOL) or Wireless-wake-on-LAN (WWOL) have limitation for Apple devices because:

1). Only work when the MacBooks are in "sleep" mode - even then it will go into hibernate mode after quite sometime

2). Only works with Apple router or 3rd party router with certain function - Googling N66U doesn't yield anything useful so I assume it is not supported.

I tried everything:
1). Ensured that "Wake for Network Access" is enabled in System Preferences
2). Put the MacBooks into "sleep" with lid open
3). Use wireless AND Ethernet

Maybe in the future this will get fixed. Kinda too bad this won't work..

It relies on apple proprietary bonjour proxy service , it looks like only apple routers run the dam thing. A shame really, all apple had to do was add standard wake-on-lan to their Os.

This may be the solution http://www.snbforums.com/threads/wowl-issue.23630/

Not supposed to work - WOL/Wireless WOL depends on a device being in sleep mode, not shutdown/offline... additionally, might also consider the router supporting Bonjour Sleep-Proxy so it can be found from other i-Devices for AirPlay, etc...
