New Around Here
Hi,

I was thinking about getting a NAS box like the Qnap TS439, but was wondering if there is any way security camera footage can get stored somewhere over the internet?

The reason is cause our place isn't that big, and if it gets broken into there is a high chance the NAS box and any recordings would be pinched.

Thanks for any info/suggestions/opinions,
Far

Pictures offsite

Don't know of a prepackaged solution but depending on your offsite backup (mozy, carbontie, etc) and the type of syncing they support. You could probably easily automate a script to sync (rsync, scp) it every 15 min or a more appropriate interval.

The thing to note is the interval of syncing leaves a vulnerable window for the unit being taken before the evidence is sync'd.

Hope that helps.

Hide the DVR where its unlikely to be stolen. Keep in mind that a determined thief will cut your phone lines and cable TV line before breaking in (especially if they know you have cameras and an alarm system). Unless you have a 3G cell modem to send real time data, you may be out of luck. Some DVR's will send "alarm" still images via email. That means you connect your security system to the DVR relay inputs. and/or set motion detection zones for each camera in the DVR. When an "event" occurs, the DVR will send an email with still images from specific cameras you specify. Not sure if a QNAP box can work like this, but real CCTV DVR appliances do.

I have tested the TS509's "Surveilance Station" remotely over the WAN in this manner and it works. It can remotely monitor for motion and record video providing you're using a supported camera. Dlink's DCS-6620G works... and the camera itself can be additionaly configured to upload still images based on motion detection and/or schedule.

Cheers,
