I have a Synology DS210j hooked up to my Netgear GS105 gigabit switch, aswell as my PCH A-110(100Mb) with no hard drive, and my PC. When I try to stream larger files from NAS(2GB+) to my Popcorn Hour it's very slow and unwatchable and usually the audio is cut out. Some of my smaller files will player however. When I transfer files through my PC(gigabit NIC) to my NAS I can get about 20MB/s transfer and my videos play fine. Now when I hook everything up though my Linksys WRT54GL router I get faster speeds and can watch my videos on my Popcorn Hour. So I think the problem is from going form my Gigabit connection from my NAS to switch, and then from the switch to 100Mb Popcorn Hour. Any suggestions? Netgears tech support didn't help.

I don't think it's a bad switch. More like an incompatibility between the Popcorn hour Ethernet port and switch. If you are using Jumbo frames on the NAS, disable them.

I own two of those switch, and just had nothing be issues with it. Overheat and duff ports. With speeds of 100mbps wasn't the quick. I quickly ditch those for Trendnet 8-port Gig (green switch with metal case (not the plastic case), issue is gone.

What type of Gig adapter is in that NAS? What type of Gig adapters are using on the PC side?

PCI-E or
PCI or
USB

You would try connecting the NAS and Popcorn hour to your router's switch.

I did and does work correctly. I just get much slower speeds so that's why I bought the switch.

What do you mean by that? They are just both on-board NIC cards.

The PopCorn Hour doesn't really need to be on a Gigabit LAN. Will it work if you move just it to the router 10/100 switch and leave the NAS and computer on the Gigabit switch?

I'm pretty sure that I tried that before and it was still giving me slow speeds while trying to stream media files to the PCH. I will try this again when I get home later just be sure.

If that's the case, then I guess you need to try another switch, as tipstir suggested.

Can you please define "duff"?

Duff (bad port) I could see 1000mbps flips to 100mbps when the switch gone over 131F using a temp sensor probe. Netgear told me that the GS105 had issues and would replace it if I paid for shipping. I had opt out and got Trendnet 8-port gig (metal case) never had issues with heat nor with duff ports.

Okay your Onboard can be either PCI or PCI-E bus. In your BIOS it would tell you and also under Windows OS System Device Manager.

Don't get me wrong but I always used Netgear switches, but lately the white plastic in both Fast and Gig have not be working out. I didn't want to go back with Linksys switches. Ports on those blue one started to go duff. You couldn't even use the port anymore. I know with two GS105 I am out $85 bucks! Trendnet has be operational since 2008. Metal case, 144KB packet buffer, 8K mac address, heatsink on the Gig controller and green ports are selling points it has 5 years warranty. New 8-port gig switch is black the packet buffers is 128KB.

I just got my new Trendnet switch and am having the same problems. Any more suggestions? I'm still getting the slow speeds from my NAS to Popcorn Hour and not quite full speeds from my PC to NAS. Thanks.

No, I had the same problem with the other switch. They're both about the same speeds from what I can tell.

Ping the PC to the NAS and what do you get for TTL=?

Is the NiC onboard the PC motherboard? Disable that and install one on the PCI or PCI-E?

I've been talking with Synology's tech support as well and they are having me reformat my hard drive because of possible bad sector alignment. I'm doing it right now so it will take a little while to format and get my stuff back on there. I will try it again in a day or two and see if that solved the problem.

Did you ever ping from the PC to NAS to see what you got for TTL=?
As for your NAS seems like they have others with same issue you're having.
