Short answer is that both are very good and neither is dramatically better than the other. Same processors, ram, # of bays. Both perform very well.

Synology is generally considered to have the better user interface. It lacks hotswap drive bays of the Qnap. It's quieter though.

Basically it doesn't make a huge difference. If the NAS is going somewhere you might hear it, the 411 is probably better. But I would probably make my decision on how much you like the user interface and add-on software you can run (if you even care about that).
