Hi there everyone,

I am planning on bying a Tp-Link Archer C8. I'll be upgrading an RT-N66U that is starting to act weird and I need AC. Is it that important for a router to have HTTPS access ? I'm not planning on connecting remotelly ...

Thanks.

PS: I hope this is the right place to ask.

I don’t worry about it at my house even though the Cisco gear supports it. I only access my equipment within my own house network.

If you were administering it over the internet it would be a no go for me, but I only locally adminster things on my network, so it isn't a big deal to me.

So on wifi lan everything is encrypted by the WPA2, right ?

If you have WPA2 enabled, yes. Of course if someone has access to your LAN, they could view the HTTP stream potentially.

Well, HTTPS is always better than HTTP in most, if not all cases...

I wouldn't recommend WAN admin access in any case, and perhaps limit/disable wireless access if possible, preferring to admin the primary router/AP on the wire... Even with with https, there's concerns with how many SOHO routers handle certs, which again suggests, don't do it...

If they have direct access to a workstation on the wired LAN, perhaps... and/or the router is on a hub, but on a switched connection, likely not..

As you suggest, WPA/WPA2 closes that hole on the wireless LAN, and https would close that hole from packet sniffing on the wire (there are ways to get around that, but in the interest of the group, not going to disclose the hows/whys, but a developer with the right tools/knowledge can do this)
