Need advice for a nas device...

You can get an LG NAS N2B12DD from Newegg for $330. It has two bays and includes two 1 TB drives and a Blu-ray recorder. I have also seen four bay, eSata or USB attached raids for as little as $99 (no drives).

iSCSI Target for my LG NAS N4B1?

In case anyone is actually reading this, I will update. I found several iScsi initiators for armv5tel but no target. So it seems I will have to compile my own. I have a steep learning curve to get through. I have downloaded various sources for cross-platform building of Linux software...

    Does anyone using dm-cache?

Interesting concept but that by itself seems to only provide block access to a ramdisk. I think yoru need an iScsi target. Version 1.4.20.2 is available in the Gnu tree.

iSCSI Target for my LG NAS N4B1?

Does anyone know of an RPM or other package with an iSCSI Target for Linux kernel 2.6.22.7 on ARM architecture? I found one RPM package for ARM, iscsi-3.1.0.3-3.armv4l.rpm. It installed without complaining, but it appears that it is only an iSCSI initiator. I tried it but it doesnt work...

Having some troubles with my NAS (Running OpenIndiana)

EON hasn't been ported to ARM architecure has it? There is an ARM port of OpenSolaris 11.

    Using 4x 2 TB WD20EADS in SMC NAS04

My LG NAS N4B1 came out ok also. I did have to reinstall the OS and redo my OS modifications. It can be very slow, however.

    WHS 2011 trial

MSDN always did charge a lot. They still do. Technet on the other hand, has gotten a lot more reasonable. See: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb892756.aspx.

    WHS 2011 trial

Technet Standard only costs $199, or $149 renewal, for anyone. You can put Windows 7 or Server on all your computers with it. You can also download Office and certain other applications. If you have more than one computer, it's a great choice.

was thinking about buying a netgear ready nas

I highly recommend the AMD E-350 based motherboards. I put Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 on one of mine. Even with Active Directory, DFS and Hyper-V enabled and 3 virtual server machines running it didn't bog down.

Distributed NAS sync - without master/slave

I know nothing about clouds at this time. I know only slightly more about Linux/Unix.

    AMD E350 + Solaris Express 11

Maybe you could contact s0rce with a PM. He reported running Solaris Express 11 on E-350 in my thread.

    AMD E-350 APU for NAS

I haven't played with Solaris in years. Maybe one of the other posters could respond to that. I have now built mine, with four 1 TB 6.0 Gbs drives and 8 GB of DDR3. I put Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 SP1 on it. It has DFS with replication to two other servers. The Windows interface can...

Distributed NAS sync - without master/slave

With either DFS or a private cloud, a server at each location could reduce traffic on the WAN.

Distributed NAS sync - without master/slave

Yes, each location would need a server. Windows 2008 R2 Server has a lot of features available for branch offices connected by slower links. DFS can be custom configured for branch offices. In addition to DFS, there is BranchCache for network files that will store local copies of commonly...

    AMD E-350 APU for NAS

I don't have an Atom to compare it to, but FWIW Windows 7 x64 SP1 reports a performance index of 3.8, with the CPU being the limiting factor. That was on the USB2 model, with 8 GB of DDR3. I'm still building the new computer.
