Going from Asus N66 to Synology AC1900 with zero improvement?

I have to start by admitting that I consider myself only semi-literate in networking issues. Having said, that I recently decided to move from an Asus N66 (N900) router to the new Synology AC1900 router. A number of my devices at home now have ac enabled wifi chips so I thought this would make...

Expanding Home Lan: Do I need a switch or a bridge

Stevech, Thanks. That's what I was guessing too. Only concern- I hope connecting one switch to another switch is not going to create problems?

Expanding Home Lan: Do I need a switch or a bridge

A couple of years back i had set up a home network (thanks to the invaluable advice that I got on this forum). The setup is as follows: cable modem- Dlink 655 router-one lan connection goes to a central switch (Procurve) - which in turn has drops to various rooms including my home...

Is Synology ds210j worth $100+ over Iomega ix2-200

Claykin Many Thanks for your input! I now have the box up and running. Its great (and I see what you meant not having to install all the software on my PC). Everything is working great..now only if I could get remote access to work. I just cant seem to do that but I guess that no longer a...

Is Synology ds210j worth $100+ over Iomega ix2-200

Claykin Thanks for letting me know. I will certainly try and see what my existing synchronization software (smartsyncpro) can manage with the NAS (arriving tomorrow!). OfIdeally I want to have one software running on my computer and not multiple backup software running. Would I not need...

Is Synology ds210j worth $100+ over Iomega ix2-200

Not at all, Tim. I am deeply grateful for your advice and the issues you raised. I finally went ahead and ordered the Synology ds110j. Just for info, I am pasting the responses regarding constant monitoring and backup from pc to NAS from the two companies: ******* Synology: Thanks...

Is Synology ds210j worth $100+ over Iomega ix2-200

Tim Maybe I should do more research before I spend my $$. Honestly being new to all this, I could not understand what you said in the sentence " And the ix2 can backup to and from both rsync and SMB shares, while the Synology can only back up to rsync targets." Is there anywhere I can look up...

Is Synology ds210j worth $100+ over Iomega ix2-200

Tim Thanks for your clear reply (and its also reassuring to know that the question made sense specially since I am a novice). After having weighed the pros and cons, I have decided to get the Synology. In addition to the squeezebox, it seems that they have a backup system that allows...

Is Synology ds210j worth $100+ over Iomega ix2-200

I am considering buying a NAS device strictly for home user stuff- centralized storage of music, photos, video, backup of our computer work, itunes server, possibly streaming music to a logitech squeezebox in the near future, and of course some sort of easy remote access but nothing too...

    RAM: WHS vs NAS question

While looking at the various NAS devices and WHS devices that are reviewed here, I noticed that NAS devices tend to have lower memory (on average at least 512mb less ). Is there a reason for this? Is WHS memory hungry? Just an amateur question. Thanks.

    Why only 1-3MB/s transfers?

Are you talking here about disabling the wireless connection from the router or from the computer? It would be a bummer if one has to switch off the wireless from the router- I have three cellphones at home logging on to wifi.

    Surge suppression and powerline networking

running the ethernet cable through a surge protector? I have been thinking of ethernet wiring the house versus installing powerline devices. The latter is half the cost but comes with this problem of surges. I was thinking of something that you might be suggesting in your earlier post-...

Synology DS209j vs Readynas Duo 2000? Whats the rationale for the former?

Tim, If I were to ignore the remote access of photo files (I am quite happy with, and, diligent too, in uploading to picasa for most of my sharing), would the lx195 still be a good choice? I have noticed recently that the new buffalo linkstation pro 1TB model you reviewed is now available for...
