VLANs on Merlin in AP mode + pfSense

Which product did you go for? I'm in the same boat and getting tired of waiting for Asus to pull their finger out. The year is 2020 and Asus still unable to release a firmware for 86U that has AiMesh and Guest Network support. Blimey!

    Guest Network on AiMesh node?

Just found something that works with AiMesh and LAN isolation. Under Wireless > Professional > Set AP Isolated = Yes. So basically all my 'guest clients' are on 2.4Ghz with AP Isolated. They can no longer see my Sonos and play their own stuff. Everyone (me) on the 5Ghz band has access to...

AiMesh / AP and Guest Network

I'm 90% I already know the answer but just want confimration before making my next move. Basically, I have two 86U's in AP mode working in AiMesh to provivde WiFi to my wireless devices. The master 86U is fed from my pfSense router. I want to restrict certain LAN access across my network and...

    pfSense computer bulid

I've got a backup from 2.4.4 if needed but I'll stick with 2.4.5 as I don't game and I'm not noticing any problems so far. I've spent most of the last two weeks reading those forums as I'm learning as much as I can. There seems to be two camps regarding 2.4.5 -

    Extending WiFi coverage to garden

Just to add closure to this thread. Bought a second hand 86U (manufactoring date 2019) and set it up as a AiMESH. Full 5GHz signal at the far end of the garden now. Only had it setup for 3 hours so far but not one dropout (Got my Sonos streaming Radio 2). Very happy with the results. Perfect!

Just upgraded to 2.4.5 This thing is just superb! Absolutely love this beast. Just added another Asus 86U too as AiMESH to extend WiFi to the garden. Now got full 5Ghz signal at the far end of garden. Sitting out with the Sonos by my side enjoying all this technology.

    pfSense computer bulid

A little update: Since installing the Samsung SSD my unit hasn't missed a beat. It's brilliant! I've had lots of time to play now and can confirm I've never had such a solid network. The fiddle-factor with pfSense seems endless, I'm still trying to weigh up if I prefer Snort or Suricata. VPN...

    Extending WiFi coverage to garden

Thanks for the heads-up. The seller confirmed their 86U was bought from Amazon May 2018 so I left it well alone. The winning bid was quite close to the price of a new unit so I'll keep reading and watching out for stocks returning to the UK.

    Extending WiFi coverage to garden

How do you find two 86U's in AiMesh? How often do you see dropouts if any? Are you using 5Ghz as the backhaul?

    Extending WiFi coverage to garden

Everywhere has sold out of the 86U but there is a second hand one near me that finishes tomorrow. I've been looking further into the Ubiquiti products and I always come away feeling somewhat confused. So many products, but no idea which ones would be best suited for my needs.

    Extending WiFi coverage to garden

I have the following; VM ISP Modem (Bridged Mode) > pfSense Router > Asus 86U (AP Mode) The 86U has 3 LAN clients connected and provides WiFi to the wireless clients throughout the house. I have seperate SSID's for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. Currently the existing WiFi signal drops-off once I've taken...

I wonder if one of you seasoned pfSense users can help me; If I want to run the OpenVPN server so my Android phone can connect to my LAN how do I make the android phone take advantage of ad blocking? Actually, I'd like to route all traffic via the OpenVPN server including the DNS.
