A QoS enabled switch is a bit of an overkill for home use - especially with gigabit. An unmanaged switch is more than sufficient for the vast majority of residential users.

Yes, you should get the electrician to terminate into a patch panel. From the patch panel you connect your router and switch. This prevents damage to the jacks from frequent connection/removal. A small patch panel costs 40 - 80.00 so it's not a big investment.

It's cleaner to terminate in a single location - i.e. in the basement. You won't save much doing what you're thinking as you're only saving on the cabling and not on labour.

The TL-R480T+ doesn't have any throughput specs on TP-Link's site... they seem to only provide it for the ER6120 and more powerful routers. Just wondering if the TL-R480T+ is sufficient for a 45mbps cable connection.
