"Upgrade" from Asus AC86U to AX86S?

Currently running my Asus AC86U w/ Merlin in a 1900sq foot ranch. The router covers the property, my basement (also 1900sq ft) and my yard with ease. No problems with the router other than the 2.4ghz channel seems to go out every six months or so, I just re-boot the router and works fine...

Mix/match router & AP vs a dedicated Mesh Kit

I received the AC86U this week and finally got around to installing it last night and along with merlin firmware. I also moved the router from the floor to the top of a 5ft book case. I now receive a 5ghz signal in my daughter's bedroom (it could be due to the higher router position) but I...

Mix/match router & AP vs a dedicated Mesh Kit

Just to give an update; I finally moved into the new home and swapped out the spare router with my current main, the Asus AC66U B1. The 5ghz signal goes through out the home other than my daughter's bedroom which is the furthest bedroom from the router plus several walls. The luckily the...

Mix/match router & AP vs a dedicated Mesh Kit

Thank you for the reply. I can swing an Asus 2900AC router, what will I be getting with it besides the fourth 5ghz stream? It will perform better than the RT-AX300 or RT-AX55 from Asus for a similar price?

Mix/match router & AP vs a dedicated Mesh Kit

I just purchased a new home, 1900 sq ft ranch with a partial finished basement that includes play area for the kids and two offices in the basement. The house has an Ethernet cable that runs from the family room (middle of the house) through the basement into the end of the living room (south...

Google FI VPN issue on phone

Shorty History; Google FI is a MVNO that offers a VPN for mobile and wi-fi data on my google pixel 3a. With the VPN on I receive a small drop in performance on my home Asus broadcom chip router which is expected, from 115/38 Mbps down and up to about 90/27. Recently I am working back in our...

AC router for an 80²m apartment

TP-Link A9 1900 AC? I found it to be faster then my Asus AC66u B1 and Netgear R6700 v3. Then again 80 square meters is not that big, even the A6 or A7 will work for you (both use the same SOC).

USB 2.0 vs 3.0 wifi adapter question

I have a question and/or theory about USB wi-fi adapters; I know USB 3.0 is much faster then 2.0 (almost 10x) and can delivery almost twice the power that USB 2.0 can to a connected device but can that increased power overheat a connected device like a USB wifi adapter (general known for...

    Having bad luck with routers

Second Update; The 2.4ghz signal throughput again dropped to a fraction of the 5ghz throughput. I swapped out the netgear nighthawk for the TP-link, a much smaller router, and set up was fairly easy. They don't tell you the default login name and password in any of the paperwork or mobile app...

    Having bad luck with routers

Update; So I was all set to purchase the tp-link router and ordered it from Amazon last night(will take almost a week even with prime). I check my 2.4ghz speed on our laptop and I'm getting 70% of my 5ghz throughput 6 feet away from the router and through a wall. Last time I re-booted the...

    Having bad luck with routers

Thanks, do you think the A9 would be worth the extra $20 for beam-forming and MU-MIMO?

    Having bad luck with routers

Wife already hates the spaghetti junction behind the TV stand, I would be hesitant to add more wires behind the TV stand or under the carpet. Looking to keep the price around $100, willing to go a little more if its something like Wifi 6 and works well with AC/N clients.

    Having bad luck with routers

I have it on surge protector but we don't really have many electrical surges or drop outs

    Having bad luck with routers

The router sits on a hard wood floor with about five inches of free space from the floor to the first level of the TV stand. Plenty of free space on each side and a large air intake duct sits behind the TV stand and keeps air moving. It's far from perfect but not the worst situation. I could...
