    When I broke down the box that it came in I noticed a sticker that said refurbished. I don't see a manufacture date on the back. The DFS channels are visible though.

    Update: Did the RMA. They could not fix it so they sent what looked to be a new 86U. Overall, a good experience with Asus.

    Anyone had any luck with the RMA process. Digging around on Asus's website is not easy to get answers. I did get this 86U as a gift so I am not really out anything.

    I don't recall if the WiFi lights were on or not after the initial failure and recovery. I have done factory resets.

    Update: Everything is working now except for WiFi. Both bands seem to be dead. The LED's on the front are not on and nothing happens when I press the WiFi on/off button on the side. When I look at the temperature tab it says disabled for both bands. In Wireless settings I am not able to...

    Good news.....so far. I did a 30-30-30 reset then did a WPS reset then did a firmware restoration to latest stock firmware and it seems to be working now. At least it stays powered on and I am able to log-in to it for now.

    I have two 86U's. One in router mode and one in AP mode. How important is it to keep the firmware (Merlin 384.9 on both) updated on the 86U that is in AP mode?

    DNS servers

    Be sure to run the DNS benchmark at different times of the day and when your LAN is quiet. Seems like I get a different result every time I run the test. I picked the two DNS that showed up most often at the top of the list and they aren't the usual ones everyone likes to use.

    I guess it depends on where you live and who your ISP is. Some DNS servers may be closer to you than others and may offer better performance than others. Try the DNS benchmark below to get an idea. https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

    RT-AC86U Possible Kernel Crash

    I saw that same sys log a lot with stock firmware. Not so much with Merlin firmware.
