    FreshTomato on RT-AC66?

Budget: $150, unless more will provide a substantial improvement. I'm currently getting close to 600 on a wired connection and 425-550 on wifi depending on the device, which doesn't seem bad. Will FreshTomato keep the old router reasonably secure, so long as it's supported?

    FreshTomato on RT-AC66?

My RT-AC66U_B1 has reached EOL - it's no longer supported by ASUS or Merlin, but appears to be supported by FreshTomato. I'm happy with the router, at least for the moment, but worry about security updates. Will using FreshTomato, so long as it's supported, mean I'll be up to date on security...

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

Alas, their technical ability is strained by using a landline phone.

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

I'm generally good with tech and have been using routers for years, including with dd-wrt and asus-wrt merlin, but I don't have any experience with router security beyond the basics.

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

Which router? If you mean the Asus, I can get someone to configure it using the app, which seems very simple and straightforward. I'd have them set it up with the old SSID and password. I've been thinking about remote access, but wonder if it's safe. For example...

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

That is quite possible. The problem is that it's my parent's router and they are far away, don't have a computer and don't have the ability to do any setup. I can get someone to go there and walk through the AC68U setup with the Asus app, but re-configuring the router is beyond that person's...

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

The lights light up on the WRT54GL, so it's not the power supply. Unfortunately, the lights are the ones that show four wired connections when in fact there are no wired connections.

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

Ancient is fine, so long as it's reliable. For their needs, being able to plug something in, have working 2.4 Ghz connectivity and not having to think about it for many years would be ideal. I'm amazed the WRT54G[L] lasted more than ten years without anyone touching it after initial setup.

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

The consensus seems to be the RT-AC68U (or the seemingly identical RT-AC66U_B1). An advantage is it can be setup with the Asus app. I hope it will be as reliable as the Linksys WRT54G[L].

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

When I search for Asus N66, all I see is the RT-N66U, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY/?tag=snbforums-20 When I search for Asus AC68 router, all I see is the RT-AC68U, https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Dual-Band-AiMesh-Router-AC1900/dp/ ??

    Highly reliable replacement for WRT54G

Over a decade ago I got my parents a Linksys WRT54G (or maybe GL). It has worked continuously since then, but appears to have died today. The only current use is to connect some Wyze security cameras at 2.4ghz. to the internet. The router would be connected over a wired connection to a cable...

Best for reliability and basic functions?

I'm running your 384.9. So far, so good. About the only config so far is choosing SSIDs and passwords. Thank you so much for your work on the firmware and thanks to you and L&LD for the advice in this thread. Much appreciated.

Best for reliability and basic functions?

My guess is that the john9527 fork, described as "very stable, ... a good choice for those who desire a 'set it and forget it' router solution" may be the better choice for someone looking for stability and simplicity. However, I'll probably try the current RMerlin firmware first, both for...

Best for reliability and basic functions?

:) Which brings us back to the question, am I likely to be better off with the mainline RMerlin firmware or John's LTS fork?
