I'm running Merlin firmware currently and for example Android app which was working on official ROM is partially is not working on Merlin's (device list is empty). So yes, I would consider official firmware probably less rich in functionality but more stable for everyday use.

I hoped RT-AC87 will provide better time scheduling then Verizon FIOS router but was wrong. I can not use network grouping to say group my son's computers into single network unit which I can apply policy on, I can not have 2 different schedules for the same computers, there is no UI for mobile...

It certainly can, it's just unneccessary DNS chatting with no explainable reason. Also this is taxing client as well which is usually (especially for IP cams are not beefy boxes likes this router).

If I have a camera which say write image to NAS share on each movement detected, then it will probably have to make 100 queuries to server within 10s period for each of the images, instead of just single one. It will not have to go to DNS server if local DNS cache was populated with proper TTL...

I replaced by FIOS router with RT-AC87 becouse Verizon router had TTL of 10s for hostnames registered with local DNS which was too low becouse I have a lot of chatty applications (like webcams etc) on local network. I was fully expected something more managable from Asus and expensive router but...
