    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

The firmware on the r7800 is better because you can use Voxel. It’s clearly faster. That should be all that matters when running consumer grade all in one equipment. Asus uses Broadcom. That means they are confined to the bottom in any rankings. Their firmware is trash and their routers...

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

Not all their stuff needs to be ceiling mounted. I find their UI very easy to configure. It’s extremely well thought out with many options with information on what they do. Try it out on their site. I started off with the IW-Pro since it’s POE and could replace a cat6 wall jack I had in...

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

I gave the r7800 to my parents. When using Voxels firmware it’s wired speed is great. It’s a Qualcomm chipset so the WiFi range with Voxels firmware again is outstanding. I’d rank it’s wifi range on par with the R9000. Actually it may be better considering it has a ton of DFS channels. At...

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

And on that note, if anyone is interested I have an R9000 for sale and a Synology RT2600AC for sale.

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

Okay - to close the loop on this. With asus and Synology not working with my native ipv6, I continued to find a better solution than my Netgear router but kept running into the same situation. Turns out it wasn’t the routers. ATT holds ipv6 leases for 2 weeks based on the device so that’s...

Ditching UniFi but need an alternative

With a 1gig connection, I have no use for QOS

Ditching UniFi but need an alternative

Ditching UniFi for consumer gear is a bit crazy. I just did the opposite. Cloud key + USG Pro + 24 poe switch + ac shd + in Wall Pro. Can’t imagine doing gigabit internet any other way....unless the USG-XG is ever available again.

    Custom firmware build for R9000 v. 1.0.2.54HF/1.0.2.54HF-HW & 1.0.3.7HF/1.0.3.7HF-HW

Well I’m still trying to get rid of it. I have Ubiquiti now for my switch and access points and cloud key. Going to install the security gateway pro tomorrow.

    Custom firmware build for R9000 v. 1.0.2.54HF/1.0.2.54HF-HW & 1.0.3.7HF/1.0.3.7HF-HW

I tried to switch away from the R9000 based on all the nice features of the RT2600ac from Synology. Unfortunately the Synology doesn’t pick up my native IPv6 like the Netgear, it’s 5ghz WiFi is erratic, and the R9000 with Voxels firmware just crushes it in speed overall.

Netgear X10 R9000 advantage of the AD band?

AD is a waste. This router is a faster version of the r7800. If you need more power than the 7800, this is a great AC2600 router. If only it has the Synology UI....

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

I love the firewall features in this router, the UI looks like a Mac desktop, it’s very pretty. I also like the network backup - all my macbooks have time machine connected through 1 usb ssd on the router. Also being able to log in to the UI from anywhere, the failover to 4g lte, the dns...

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

For one, my Nest Protects require ipv6. I have 6 of them. Also, I prefer not to use NAT. My entire house is setup with my devices preferring IPV6- at least the devices that use it like Nest and Sony Android TVs etc. Interesting bit about Synology - this router is otherwise amazing -...

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

Got the Synology - this is a damn nice router. Wifi speeds and Lan speeds are = to my R9000. Not surprised there. Again, ipv6 issues. Can't grab an ipv6 address via DHCP. Shows up as limited connection when I put the details in manually. Very disappointing. Seems Netgear is the only one...

    RT-AC86U - Awful router - Netgear wins

RMerlin - I was inspired to try Asus again after a few years off based on your work. With the 86U, I tried a factory reset, etc - nothing worked to get it to come close to the 950/950 and it couldn't pull ipv6 native. Something I also find interesting is that on my R9000, before using Voxel...
