    Ahh...the problem before is that the router was not responsive. Enabling DHCP (on local device) or setting IP to 192.168.1.10/24 would not allow me to ping 192.168.1.1.

    So I picked up one of the rebranded AC68U's that were sold as T-Mobile Hotspots. I successfully reverted it back to the default Asus firmware. I upgraded to Shibby's Tomato USB 138. My speeds were crap. Like transfer in the kilibyte range while in the same room about 20ft from the router...
