    New Router with Removable Antennae

Thanks, @Kal-EL! I have an R7000 as my home router and love it. Perhaps the way I should go. Do you know anything about the Nighthawk AC2400 (it doesn't have a model number distinct from that)? It seems to be a Best Buy exclusive and looks similar to the R7800; it even has detachable antennas...

    New Router with Removable Antennae

I'm interested in using a modern Netgear router (preferably just to keep things simple with other routers I'm using, or I'm open to something else) to replace an old Linksys WRT54G I use with a bespoke wireless antenna (an old DBS satellite dish) I made years ago as a wireless extender across a...

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

Thanks, Tim. Those charts do look a great deal closer than whichever other ones I was looking at. I appreciate all of the advice! Tim

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

Hi, Tim, I've been thinking about your recommendations... do you think any of the routers you'd recommend will achieve the maximum performance that the MBP is capable of with its AC1750 adapter? I've been looking (obviously) at the more expensive routers, but something struck me: the difference...

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

I'm looking for pretty much the same thing. I did pick up the Thunderbolt to Gigabit adapter for $30 from Apple, but would really like to move towards wireless as much as possible since I don't have ethernet runs necessarily where I want to utilize my computer. I keep my Aperture photo library...

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

Thanks, everyone for the comments. I think the experiences posted (and Tim's review) are what cause me to be hesitant about the AirPort Extreme. It seems like the AC1900 routers for the same money are significantly faster even when functioning as AC1750 routers. And, of course, my goal is...

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

Thanks, Tim. Those articles are fantastic -- I was suspecting the things they said just from trying to reason out the AC-related terminology, but I hadn't found a good set of tables that just laid it out (I had tried looking on your site, but hadn't bumped into it). So, if the rMBP is an AC1750...

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

OK. Thanks, Tim -- that helps! So, I'm a little dense on the different AC ratings -- I guess I've been out of the loop since I haven't had any AC equipment. Can one device like the one in the rMBP connect at both and grab the full 1750 by connecting at both frequencies (I'm guessing not, but I...

New Router/AP to pair with 2013 Retina MBP

Hello, friends, I just ordered a new MacBook Pro, which will, excitingly, come with 802.11ac support. However, Apple's documentation appears a bit sparse to me -- does it support AC1200? AC1300? Etc. All that said, I'm thinking about replacing my 3 or 4 year old Linksys WRT400N with an...

    ZyXEL GS1100-24

I wanted to echo JoeJoe's positive remarks about Zyxel switches. Unlike the Netgear and Trendnet switches, I am able to get a very reliable (0% packet loss) connection between the two Zyxel switches with my long (260 ft or so) run and surge protectors. In addition, it was working so well...

    Fiber Between Buildings

Thanks for all of the advice, Terry and Kanewolf! I'm going to keep this in mind if I have to run fiber.

    Fiber Between Buildings

Thanks Terry and matthelm! I appreciate all of the tips. If I go the fiber route (and I'm increasingly leaning that way), do you have recommendations on where to go for a good deal on pre-terminated cables close to 100m in length? I ordered two SFP capable switches from Newegg on sale to give...

    ZyXEL GS1100-24

Does anyone have experience with a ZyXEL GS1100-24? Newegg has these switches on sale for $79.99, which is rather tempting since it includes two SFP module ports in addition to a 24 port Gig-E switch. The switch is also not overtly promoted as a "green" switch, so I was thinking it might dodge...

Gigabit Switches on a Long Ethernet Run

Thanks, TheToad, Tim and Tipster. On each side, the first switch isn't attached to anything of great worth. So I could, if nothing else, put the switch "out in the open" and then put the surge protector between it and the main network... The green switches still bother me a bit, even though...

Gigabit Switches on a Long Ethernet Run

Thanks. You may have a point. I tried grounding the surge protectors, but to no avail. The network still goes up and down constantly when using the surge protector (but not at all when the lines go straight into a switch). The same model surge protectors work fine on a somewhat shorter run...
