How do I configure WireShark to filter for an iPhone connected to a laptop via Windows 10 "mobile hotspot"?

My iPhone periodically triggers an outside server to respond with a burst of packets that overload my WISP's link. I hope to use Wireshark to show me packets sent from and received by my iPhone in these instances. To test this I connected a Windows 10 laptop directly to my WISP's SM (radio)...

    VLAN usage question

Note to readers: I'm looking for a simple recipe here. Maybe this is the wrong forum for that, so please let me know if that's the case. The current application seems one step removed from rudimentary, to my simple mind. Back when the application involved a single Linksys RF082 all I did was...

    VLAN usage question

Thank you for replying, @coxhaus, but your reply is over my head. My only exposure to VLANs was long ago with a Linksys RV082 (no external switch involved), where I simply isolated two groups of PCs by assigning them to different VLANs. They all continued to have access to the Internet but...

    VLAN usage question

(NOTE: I have read the SNB article, "VLAN How To: Segmenting a small LAN", which introduced me to the fundamentals of using the VLAN feature of a managed switch.) Let's assume I have a router and a low-end, web-managed switch that both offer VLAN capabilities. On the switch I have some ports...

can't access Windows shares via VPN - HALP!

I've configured my RT-AC66U (fw: 3.0.0.4.376_1123) for VPN per the various published docs. (VPN Server on, PPTP, Samba on) One disparity in the docs is they refer to a setting “Enable VPN+DHCP Connection” in WAN | Advanced Settings that doesn't exist in my firmware. Another disparity is that...

Which AP for as many as 50 users

"50 (wifi) users" are guests with smartphones, tablets, and the occasional laptop. Maybe a few could be watching a youtube video but most would be accessing static pages and email. I'd say 50 is a worst case scenario and even then only half might be "using the Internet" at any given time...

How do you avoid running out of IP addresses?

Thank very much to all who replied. Thank you to everyone who replied! I thought maybe I was overlooking a trick that would prevent devices from reconnecting to the network -- or at least prevent them from being assigned an IP address without some action on the user's part. It seems...

How do you avoid running out of IP addresses?

Since most smartphones will remember the wi-fi passkey for an SSID and therefore connect automatically, how does one deal with a public place with many repeat visitors, like a mid-size church, where maybe 50 people might want to actually use the wi-fi on a given day but everyone who has ever...

Should devices with static IPs be entered into Reserved Address list?

I'm curious about when to enter devices into a router's Reserved Address list. Specifically, the Netgear WNDR3400v2 router, but I assume the function of reserved addresses is largely the same for all routers. One use I've found for the reserved address list is to force the router to assign...
