I added the latest Merlin firmware onto the router and set the SMB version to 1 only. This appears to have solved the problem. But thanks for the info above. Really helpful. Question: is that smb.conf on the last line different to what I did in the firmware?

A more stupid question: How do you bring up a terminal to enter that command?!

How did you move it back to SMB1? The official firmware release does not have this option. Edit: I do have the same setup and same issue as yours: slow playback on some files.
