    Improving small file transfer speed?

Thanks. About 5 posts above I note that I've started making zip archives. It definitely helps. Google drive and other cloud solutions are possible, but I'd have to purchase space since I have a lot of data. I don't need all the data synced to every device all the time. The local and network...

    Improving small file transfer speed?

Sounds worth a try. If I can get some time I'll try adding a flash swap. As for USB mode, I almost never use the 2.4G band, so interference in USB3 mode shouldn't be a problem.

    RT-N66U in Bridge Mode

Better late than never. :) Thanks for the tip. My 2 weeks at home turned into 2 months. Fortunately I was able to work at full effort the whole time. I ended up purchasing a new laptop with excellent WiFi, and I've been back to work for about 3 weeks. But the old laptop will still be used...

    Improving small file transfer speed?

Thanks again for that tip. That's what I decided to do, and it helps save quite a bit of time on transfers.

    Improving small file transfer speed?

Yes, I was considering that. I will look into it further.

    Improving small file transfer speed?

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into ways of supplying power externally.

    Improving small file transfer speed?

OK. That's about what I expected, but I thought it would be good to ask people with more expertise. I certainly recognize the limitations of my current hardware. I've thought about getting a different drive or a dedicated NAS, but given my minimal usage I can't justify the cost. If anyone...

    Improving small file transfer speed?

Thanks for the notes! I didn't know things like that. That's why I'm asking. Other than a different file system, is there really anything else I can do to optimize my current setup?

    Improving small file transfer speed?

I have an AC86U with an external drive attached. It's an old 1 TB 5400rpm laptop drive in a USB3 enclosure and it's attached to the USB3 port on the router. I use it for simple storage, file transfers, and occasional media streaming. I mostly interact with it using my Windows laptops (using...

    RT-N66U in Bridge Mode

My workplace (a university medical/research campus) is shut down due to concerns about spread of coronavirus, so I'm tele-working for the next 2 weeks. My old laptop is still a solid performer, but it has the world's worst WiFi card. It's an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230, and they're known to...

Replace N66R; want to improve USB performance

Hi all- Just checking in to say that the 86U is working great. I haven't made any changes since initial setup and it's been flawless. I run DLNA, Samba, FTP, basic traffic monitor and not much else. CPU workload is light and I don't have many devices, at least compared to some I've read about...

Replace N66R; want to improve USB performance

Thanks! I did look at the posts. Most of my usual setup procedures are exactly as you describe, including various reboots and changing the control channels. I know the WiFi environment around my home pretty well (e.g. other nearby networks and what channels they use), so those settings were...

Replace N66R; want to improve USB performance

Hi all. Thanks for the tips. The new RT-AC86U is working very well. It looks kind of like a Decepticon insects head/face, but whatever... I did a minimal setup, then installed the latest Merlin and connected the USB3 HDD. Signal strength is excellent and connectivity is rock solid. CPU use is...

Replace N66R; want to improve USB performance

After getting additional recommendations here and elsewhere, I've decided to try the ASUS AC86U. It's a bit more than I wanted to pay, but I caught a good price on Amazon with free same-day shipping, so it's all good. And when I think back, the N66U was probably about $160 back in 2012, and it...
