    New Synology 1010+

Why not ask Sans Digital for a loaner. I suspect they'd love the publicity. My impression thus far is that they have an excellent product that is very cost effective. (I have no financial connection to Sans Digital - I just bought the box on the advice of a friend who is using several of them...

    New Synology 1010+

My computer sees this 5-drive, RAID-5 array as a very large, single, 3-partition (2TB each) eSata drive. Sans Digital TR5M-B 5 Bay SATA to eSATA (Port Multiplier) JBOD / RAID 0, 1, 1+0, 5 Enclosure (Black). Total cost: $216 (plus the cost of the five 1.5TB WD "green" drives I used to fill it)...

    New Synology 1010+

In response to the new 5-drive add-on chassis for the 710+ and 1010+ NAS models. Am I missing something here? Is the DX510 any different from similar boxes from Sans Digital, etc.? Why twice the price?

    A question of range (802.11n) . . .

My friend doesn't use wireless in his house at all. He has 3 computers, all of them wired with gig/e to the DGL-4100. What I had originally conceived was simply replacing the router with a wireless model and treating the barn computer as if it were a laptop in the house -- except, both the...

    A question of range (802.11n) . . .

So, rather than attempt to make a wireless router with a high-gain external antenna and the wireless client card with a similar high-gain external antenna do the work, I'm better off buying a pair of outdoor bridge/radios with integrated antennas and connecting one to the existing router and the...

    A question of range (802.11n) . . .

I realize that one cannot expect extended range with a standard 802.11n router, regardless of brand (or manufacturers' Madison Ave hype); however, would it be possible to extend the range between the router and client by using a pair of external parabolic antennas? Specifically, this one: 2.4...

How to connect desktop to Netgear WNDR3700 wirelessly . . .

No one has responded (although it has been less than a day). Hopefully, someone can give me advice on the options.... If I choose the Netgear WNDR3700 router with dual-band N, am I better off going with a Netgear product to connect the new desktop machine or a product from someone else? The...

How to connect desktop to Netgear WNDR3700 wirelessly . . .

Currently using D-Link DGL-4300 with P45/E8400 desktop (hard-wired) and old laptop (wireless-G). About to purchase new laptop (wireless-N) and a second desktop (P55/i7-860). Need new wireless router (most probably the new Netgear WNDR3700 as that seems to be the top choice and its additional...

How To Build a Cheap Petabyte Server: Lessons Learned

While it's true that the Backblaze pod isn't an uber-NAS, it would be quite easy to make one of it. The chassis is ideal in many respects. The system could be configured exactly as described or it could be altered with other off-the-shelf single- or dual-processor motherboards and/or true RAID...

DIY WHS Media Server - Help with parts

The case is just a case with 20 hot-swap slots for drives. The back plane has connectors that comply with the special cables used by SAS/Sata array controllers. But you still need a controller. Here is the manufacturer's product page for the RPC-4220. There is also a version that has...

DIY WHS Media Server - Help with parts

I'm going for this case: NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server Chassis w/ 20 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays. It's not pretty like the Lian-Li, but it holds 20 3.5-inch sata hard drives in hot-swap bays out of the box. Nothing extra to buy. Don't know if it's available Donw Under, though.

    a King Kong of media server/NAS units . . .

A friend for whom I've built several computers in the past wants a gargantuan media server NAS unit -- something on the order of 20+ terabytes with room to grow. That's considerably larger than anything I've ever built. I'm supposing that the best solution might be a minimalist motherboard...

Are Three Drives the Charm? Thecus N3200 Reviewed

[Article link] The new Thecus 3-drive NAS sounds like a cost-effective alternative for someone who doesn't need its big brother's extra 2 drives. However, although YOU (Tim Higgins) didn't review it, there HAS been another 5-drive NAS reviewed (by Craig Ellison) on SNB besides the Thecus N5200...
