Personally I would go OPNSense + Unbound DNS + Adguard, guides so easy to follow, I did it and no expert, also enable upnp plugins, makes life easier.

Has anybody come across a guide or plugin that mirrors the simplicity and capabilities of FlexQOS?

As I use an OPNsense PC as my firewall/router and the RT-AX86U is now just an dual band AP connected using the 2.5G NIC, thought I'd ask for members thoughts and maybe why?

My Choice .. 1. Install OPNsense bare metal on Topton, to turn it in to a firewall/router. 2. Within OPNsense, add the Unbound and either PiHole or Adblock plugin. 3. Dream7, configure as an AP and connect directly to Toptun.

My Adguard plugin filter lists working inside OPNsense+Unbound and I work 100% from home over Cisco Anyconnect using a dual pipe for non-VPN and VPN traffic to Zscaler and never had a site misbehave, important in the financial industry I work in. Probably some duplication, but Adguard takes care...

My AX86U is now an AP, I went bare metal mini desktop with OPNsense and now max out my connection that the router just couldn't do. I'm not going to replace the router until it dies as my wi-fi cards matches it's capabilities, then I will buy a real AP, will not get another router, as consumer...

Or as I did use a cheap ex-corp micro PC with multiple 2.5G NICs or one the specialist pc's with multi 2.5G NICs as your router (hint it's Proxmox based) and then the Asus as an AP.

well I finally replaced my AX86U and got on Ebay a Dell Precision T3240 8core Xeon 64GB ram, 256GBnvme for £87. Stuck in a dual 2.5GbE card £20, thats my Proxmox+Opensense+piHole router, old router is an AP. Can't grumble for £100 !

Doing the same thing, replacing my Asus router with a Dell T3420, using either Proxmox or XCP-ng (+ Orchestra) hypervisor on bare metal, OPNsense, Pihole and Unbound in VMs or containers, the existing router will become a switch/AP. As a bonus, if your happy with wifi capabilities/performance...

Personally, starting to seriously think about dumping boxed routers and going micropc route with 2.5G or better LANs and access points front and back of house, costs coming down to those of a top end router and even more flexible and longer life.

Got the servers dirt cheap, yes one big full fat would have been nice.

I had same issue until I switched off uTP, seemed to be flooding router until WAN dies.

Maybe time to take a closer look at pfSense and OPNsense.
