2.5" NAS - QNAP or Synology?

New Around Here
Hi,

Newbie to SNB here, so first up I wanted to say thanks to all who contribute; it's a great resource.

I'm looking at setting up a NAS for home use. Initially, I want to use it mainly for centralised storage of media files (planning a Sonos installation) and system backup, but looking to the future a UPnP setup is a definite path.

For a variety of reasons (mainly power and size) I've decided to go with a 2.5" unit; either the QNAP SS-439 or the Synology DS409slim. Either would seem a good choice with more-than-adequate performance for my needs

At the moment, I'm leaning towards the QNAP. A big plus is the full volume encryption (call me paranoid), but some of the other features (scheduled on/off, connectivity) are also swinging it.

The Synology on the other hand gets positive reviews (they both do) and has the advantage of being a lot cheaper.

With that in mind, I have two questions:

- Is there any significant differentiator between the two?

- Given the QNAP have released their upgrade TS-x59 series, does anyone have any idea if they plan to upgrade the SS-439 soon?

Any comments/thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!
