2 RT-N66U's or 1 and something else for 2.4 wireless?

New Around Here
My Netgear WNDR3700 V1 2.4ghz radio bit the dust this weekend. So I've decided to go with the N66U as a replacement. I don't have any 5ghz devices so I'm really wanting the best 2.4ghz performance.
Right now I have a 3700 in my equipment closet upstairs and another V2 hardwired in a central downstairs location acting as a WAP.
While I could just stick with the V2 downstairs I'm considering getting another Asus for brand continuity and hopefully a performance boost. Is there a piece of equipment that compliments the N66U as a wired WAP at a better price/performance than just another N66U?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Try checking out Joegreat's signature. He seems to have pretty good luck with RT-n66u as main router and rt-n16 as access point (AP mode)

Yes, I do! :)

With kind regards

I would just continue to use the remaining WNDR3700 (a WNDR3700 V2, if I'm reading your posting correctly), as a wired AP as you are doing now? Unless you really need better performance for streaming or something, save your money until you need to spend it...

That's what I'd do personally, just replace the broken one and keep using the working one, if I could. On the other hand, if you really need more performance, that's another thing entirely *smile*.

Thanks for the respones so far.
My downstairs WNDR3700 V2 is still functioning as a wired AP. After looking at pricing for the RT-N16 (~$85) I think I will stick to the current downstairs AP. I have no real performance complaints. I expected a single band AP to be much cheaper.
I have discovered that the upstairs WND3700 V1 2.4 GHz radio is still working, just the range has dropped to about 3 ft
