I am about to buy a 3TB external. Any suggestion on brand that works for RT-AC66u USB?

None from me. I can't work with closed-source or proprietary technologies such as used by Apple. Sorry.

I picked up this WD 3TB external in Microcenter the other day. Can confirm it works great with the RT-AC66U:
